Business Moderation: Determine Objectives – Tips for a Successful Moderation Design

Hi there! Do you remember? The last two times I have explained to you why it is so important for your business moderation to deal with your participants in detail in advance – in addition to the topic of your workshop .

Today, we shall focus on the following question:

3. “What objectives / non objectives and results should be reached at the end of the workshop?”

Before you begin with the actual workshop / business moderation design, you should also consider what the objectives and non objectives are that should be achieved as well as the results / deliverables you want to reach together with your participants.

The objectives should best be determined in advance together with your client (if there is one).

The objectives and non objectives can – of course – also be drawn up together with the group. So you get your participants automatically to pick up the necessary commitment towards an objective, they have set themselves in advance.

To clarify the objective you can ask the following questions: What do you want to be different from what it was before the workshop? What has to be achieved? What are the benefits of the workshop?

Possible answers could be: “A common vision for 2050” or “the mission statement is accepted by all” or “strengthening the team cohesion”.

Non objectives are important to record what can’t or should not be reached. This leads to an even better definition and clarification of your objectives.

Caution: Do not confuse with the “path to the objective” (= the sequence of a workshop) and the results! In comparison to the rather higher ranking objectives, the results of your business moderation are more hands-on outcomes, like a list of suggestions for problem solving, a DRAFT vision 2050, a register of the key competencies, a TO DO list, etc.

Distinguish this clearly, similar to project management! This sharpens the focus of your workshop. However do not be surprised when formulating it takes a little time.

But, as Seneca already said: “If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favourable.”
